Mutts Against Butts

Mutts Against Butts First Dog-Friendly Environmental Cleanup Event in San Diego (Mar 1)

Mutts Against Butts Volunteers Partner with Their Dogs to Collect Cigarette Butts to Beautify Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach

WHEN: Saturday, March 1st from 9am to 11am

WHERE: Meet at Libs Chiropractic 4410 Lamont St Pacific Beach, CA 92109
*After Party hosted at PB Fish Shop 1775 Garnet Ave Pacific Beach, CA 92109 – beer and prizes.*

WHAT: Mutts Against Butts is a dog-friendly environmental campaign focused on collecting cigarette butts to reduce pollution in our water ways and protect marine life.

WHY:  Cigarette butts are the most commonly discarded piece of waste worldwide. It is estimated that 4.69 billion pounds of butts wind up as toxic trash each year, creating an enormous environmental, health, and economic burden on our society. Litter clean-up costs the U.S. over 11 billion annually, cigarette butts represent an estimated 32% of that litter. Cigarette filters are made from cellulose acetate, a plastic that can break into smaller pieces, but will never biodegrade or disappear. What’s worse is that the filters themselves are a sham. They offer no health protection and are simply a marketing device to give the appearance that a cigarette is somehow safer. Most people think of oil spills, and chemical dumping when you hear the words “industrial polluter.” However, as it turns out, a cigarette butt appears to be the single, most continuous industrial polluter there is.

San Diego, CA – “Mutts Against Butts” is the first dog-friendly organization focused on environmental clean-up events in San Diego. Partnering with local businesses, Mutts Against Butts hopes to focus on cigarette butts clean-up to reduce pollution in our water ways and streets while having fun with our four-legged friends.

Cigarette butts collected will be sent to TerraCycle in New Jersey (NJ); the company recycles the butts into recyclable bins and other products. We as consumers have just as much responsibility in disposing of our waste as large industrial companies do. Show up and help us raise awareness and educate the citizens of San Diego in making sure they do their part in recycling, reusing, reducing, and repairing our environment.

A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health stated, “Several options are available to reduce the environmental impact of cigarette butt waste, including developing biodegradable filters, increasing fines and penalties for littering butts, monetary deposits on filters, increasing availability of butt receptacles, and expanded public education.”

Come join Mutts Against Butts for its first event in Pacific Beach on March 1st. There’ll be an after-party and prizes for the most butts collected. The new twist on environmental cleanups has spurred a lot of interest in the area from businesses willing to donate prizes and host post cleanup events at dog-friendly patios; after-all the pups are working hard too.

When: March 1st, 9:00AM – 11:00AM

Where: Libs Chiropractic Center – 4410 Lamont St, San Diego, California 92109-4515
